hotel options in Melbourne

I'm beginning to research hotel options for our visit to Melbourne in January and need your advice. We are looking at the Park Hyatt, Intercontinental, and Langham. All of them seem fine and very similar. Do any of these stand out for you? Are there any historic heritage hotels that we should consider as well as those are usually our favorites? Bottom line, we want something comfortable and walkable, with nearby shops and restaurants. Thanks for your help.

The Langham is very convenient to the CBD, the river and the gardens - short walk across the river into the city. Lots of restaurants along the river bank.
The Intercontinental is in an old building in a good part of Melbourne with easy access to the trams around the city.
The Park Hyatt is just outside the CBD square and perhaps not as convenient for visitors to the city.

Thanks marg. Sounds like the Langham checks all of the marks. When you mention that the Intercontinental is in an "old" building, do you mean just showing age or that it is in a building that has history?

Intercontinental is in an 1891 building - still has the original tin outhouses (not in use ) on the back outside wall.
The Park Hyatt whilst in the edge is just as close to everything as the Intercontinental .
The other historic hotel to have a look at is The Windsor built in 1883.

Oh and another bonus is that Florentinos is just around the corner from The
Windsor - they have the most yummiest brunches!

I love The Langham. It's always consistent. And I will throw another two in for you, the Sofitel on Collins and the Grand Hyatt. I have stayed in all three. Obviously , if price is a factor, go with any of them. They are all right next to the tram line. I love to walk a lot in a city, tend not to use public transport. If I was to book tomorrow , if these hotels were all the same price, I would go with The Sofitel.

If you are going to be in Melbourne late January around Australian open time I know lots of the tennis players stay at the Sofitel .

Huddoshols, thanks. I'll take a look at your suggestions. I too love exploring a city on foot; it's the best way to get up close and personal.

Northie, we will be in Melbourne from January 10 to 15.

I've stayed at The Langham (great to be on riverbank, arts centre , lots of cafes and can walk to parks along the river ), Park Hyatt (absolutely beautiful Art Deco rooms and just near Fitzroy Gardens and still in free tram zone), Sofitel ( fab views across the city and on a major street, lots of cafes both formal and casual), Windsor (love the historic nature of the building , top of the city right opposite park and trams)

Tennis starts 16 January so players and visitors for that would be in hotels before that .

Northie, thanks so much for all this information. Looks like the choice will be harder than I imagined, although it sounds like I won't go wrong with any of these.
