Hire car in Melbourne

We always rent a car for at least a week or more. We want to rent a car just for 3 days in Melbourne and drive the GOR. It costs as much as a whole week. I checked the Europcar, CarRentals and DrivAway, they all charge almost the same from $180-220 just for 3 days for an intermediate car. When I put in 7 days, the price came up almost the same. Anyone knows where can I find a less expensive rate just for 3 days? We will spend 3 days in Melbourne after the GOR which we do not need a car.

I know it costs more to pick up at the airport. We can always pick it up in city since we will return it without having to drive back to the airport. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

You could try this site, I haven't used it, but suggests 4 days in October $120 AUD for a Camry.

I don't know that picking up at the airport is more expensive, and I would definitely avoid trying to get of the city in afternoon peak hour.

In my experience the shorter the rental, the more it costs per day.

I've used this site in the past, might be worth a look:

I had the pleasure of working in Car Rental for several years in a previous life! My suggestions are, if it is not peak period in Aus, just "walk up" to the booths at Mel APort and ask rate for 3/4 days. Go to them all. You can always bring it back to Tullamarine, then get either the Skybus or taxi into Melbourne. That's what I would do. If it is not peak period, I have never booked a car ever. This includes over 20 years of Europe travel. Do a bit of research though, so you have an idea of some prices. Haggle a bit, they want their cars off the rank!

I am not sure if early November is considered as peak period.

Thanks for the info. I rented a Hyundai Elantra (or similar) from Europcar (from Songdoc's suggestion) in Tasmania for the first week of November. It's only AUD 218.28 for the whole week. Pick up in downtown Launceston on Tamar St, practical next door to the Clarion Hotel. We will return it at the airport.

When I try to rent just for 3 days in Melbourne, it costs a bit more than a week in Tasmania. It got me thinking to ask if anyone knows where and how to find a cheaper rate. Some rental companies impose a large fee if you pick up at the airport base on my experiences.

I just tried with www.rentalcars.com, it comes up as much as any other rental companies. I guess it must be the cookies!

Thanks for the suggestions.

Hi Teatravel
This may not be of any help, but while I was getting my lunch today (see my contribution to Gruezi), I cam across this car rental firm https://www.redspot.com.au/ It is opposite the new Sheraton In Little Collins Street and seems to have pick up in the city. Don't know anything about the reasonableness of the rates- have never rented a car!
