Hike Charlotte Track Area or Abe Tasman National Park??

We are planning to do several days of hiking up on the northern section of the South Island.

We are looking at either doing some hiking on the Charlotte Track OR doing some hiking in Abe Tasman National Park.\

Any feedback on preferences and reasons to do one rather than the other area would be great. We realize we can't do it all, so we are willing to chose between one of these two possibilities for a couple of days of great hiking!

Where will you be based or what city do you arrive at? They are about 2 hours apart so a base close to either or would be good. Both are good choices really.
If Picton/Blenheim then QCT is closer.
If based in Nelson then ATNP is a better choice.
Time of year? If Jan/Feb it gets very busy in ATNP and accommodation would be hard to find but you could try Motueka. QCT should not be so busy.
I like the golden sand beaches of ATNP but the Marlborough Sounds are beautiful as well. Beaches tend to be stony and rocky so not so good for lying in the sun.

We loved Abel Tasman and in retrospect, wish we had spent more time there. Bad planning on my part! Here is a link to our blog of one, all to short day hike in the park. A link to our blog of our trip in 2015 https://accidentalnomads.com/category/new-zealand/ Abel Tasman is the last entry. We will return next year and will have a look at QCT to see if we can include that this time.

They're both good, but I prefer Queen Charlotte, which gets fewer visitors and is therefore less busy, particularly in high season. On a beautiful day, the views of the sounds from Queen Charlotte Track are something else. And fewer sandflies!

Crelston,
Concerning the hike in ATNP, where exactly did you start? Which water taxi company did you use.

All, thanks for the posts. I think we've found a way to do two days of hiking in each of AT and Charlotte!

We got the taxi from the beach in Kaiteriteri and were dropped off at Medlands Beach. A four hour hike back to Anchorage Bay where we met the taxi and cruised back to our van. I think we used http://abeltasmanseashuttles.co.nz/water-taxi/ anyway we booked it from the hut right by the beach.
