Hertz car rental New Zealand South Island
Does anyone have an opinion on if it is worth paying $100 (US) more to rent from Hertz to get a newer car vs saving money and renting from Apex and getting an older car? I'd like to save money, but really don't want my car to break down during our short trip on the island. Thanks!

One other question! Is it necessary to get any extra auto rental insurance coverage should we get in an accident and someone gets hurt? (Knock on wood!) (We are covered through our health insurance and credit card for car damage). I have this question for both Australia and New Zealand. Thanks again!

Apex has a good reputation. But if $100 gives you more peace of mind...
As I understand it, if you require medical treatment while in New Zealand, their health system will cover it. Car hire insurance is only available for the car.

APEX is our go to rental car agency in NZ. We intentionally rent older cars as they're already gone through their initial bumps and bruises, which is a good thing, especially for those unfamiliar with driving on the left who might be prone to knocking off a side mirror.
Their cars are well maintained - don't worry about that.
Do you have a US issued credit card Kelsey? If so, here's some info I posted a few years back regarding insurance on rental cars in NZ:

"In New Zealand, Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and theft protection are included in car rental rates. The CDW excess (deductible) is the responsibility of the renter, however some credit cards, such as my US issued Platinum Visa, will cover the excess.
Not all credit cards work this way. For instance, Mastercard requires that ALL insurance be waived for their coverage to apply, and you cannot waive the insurance already built into a NZ car rental, due to local laws.
Third party liability insurance is included in NZ car rentals too, up to the limit required by NZ law (I don't know the figure, but you can probably find out easily enough).
We rent from APEX when we visit NZ and have been very pleased with them.
We never buy insurance, as we're covered by our US Visa* Platinum card, which covers even the excess (deductible) when we rent in NZ and Australia.
Buying additional CDW insurance just lowers your deductible, but in our case our Visa covers this, so we don't need it.
If involved in a car accident in NZ resulting in injury you and the other party will be treated just like a Kiwi in accordance with their ACC program where the NZ government will cover all medical costs (while in NZ) incurred due to the accident.
You cannot be sued.
Contact your credit card company and ask, and then request a written copy of their rental car benefits.
