Help with Itinerary to Fraser Island, GBR and Whitsundays

Jump to last reply

We are a work from home family and will be traveling around eastern Australia with our then-18 month old toddler. From Brisbane we would like to visit Fraser Island, Whitsundays and Port Douglas/GBR. The thing is, we can mostly sightsee only on the weekends. So we need a couple base points at or around these areas. This was my idea:

1) From Brisbane, take a 3 day weekend and drive up to Fraser Island area, take a 2 night tour with a tour company. Fly back to Brisbane (?), stay there for a couple more weeks (or drive from here up to Airlie Beach?).

2) Fly to Airlie Beach (ugh so many flights, but the drives seem such long distances!!). Use as base for 3-4 weeks, see Whitsundays on day trips, take a couple day tours of GBR from here.

3) Drive to Port Douglas, stay here 3-4 weeks. Explore more of GBR (sail to Lower Isles?), Daintree, etc. From here we would fly out of Australia to Bali.

Would it be better to just rent a campervan and leave from Brisbane and just take our time meandering all the way up to Port Douglas over the course of a month + instead of a couple base points? I would just need to be absolutely sure we could find reliable internet during the week.

Any suggestions or tips?
