Hamilton Island or Heron Island
Planning next Oct to visit Australia and wanted to know for relax, nature, good food birds, and snorkelling/diving which Island is best. I know Hamilton is more populated, and Heron is more remote.
We are 2 senior ladies spending 16 to 18 days in Queensland...both avid snorkelers and I am a diver. This is my dream trip..Both of us are birds watchers so we have planned a lot of time in areas to see bird life.

Sorry I can't help much but there is a bit of info on the Trip Advisor Forum that may be useful. Have a wonderful trip.

Check the weather conditions for October as much as you can before booking, that will make a difference to clear waters etc. Nov-Apr (roughly) is the wet season in the north which means high humidity and regular rain (though not cold). I've read that the rain churns up the sand in the water but am no expert.
You probably know this but you can fly direct to Hamilton Island from Sydney (or wherever your flight arrives) which would save some time.

Judging from your interests, Heron Island is the one for you. Snorkeling and diving will be limited on Hamilton Island - you'll have to take a lengthy boat ride out to the Outer Reef for good diving and snorkeling. On Heron, the reef is at your doorstep. Hamilton is much more built up, whereas Heron has just the one resort, no daytrippers - a great place for relaxation and enjoying nature.
