Great Ocean Road Tour

We just returned from a wonderful one-day tour of the Great Ocean Road (out of Melbourne) with Brian and his company, "A Tour with a Difference." There were only 10 passengers in his van and he provided excellent service and commentary. Our day included the terrific ocean views, a stop where we fed wild parrots and viewed wild koalas up in trees, a walk through a rainforest, and visits to the Gorge and to the London Bridge. It was a fantastic day. With morning tea, lunch and dinner included, it was $130 per person. Well worth it.
I heard about this company on this site, so wanted to share my experience with others looking for a good day tour. We left about 7 am and returned about 9 pm.

Hi, Sue. Do you recall any more info about the koala stop? Was it an eco-tour business or refuge?

Naryna -

I'm sure Sue will be back with details on the koalas, but I just wanted to mention that we toured the GOR on our own and we saw lots of koalas in the wild. One good place to look is on the road to Cape Otway Lightstation and the Otway Fly... just look up. We even saw one crossing the road, so do take care if you're driving.

We also saw one in a tree behind the visitor's center in Lorne.

Good to know, Melnq8. We'll be driving the GOR on our own, too. We have no need to feed or otherwise "cuddle" koalas -- we'd much rather see them in the wild.

You're full of good info; you've provided feedback on a previous post of mine.

Narnya, the area around Wye River is also well known for koalas, take the road to the left near the hotel.

For kangaroos stop off at the Angelsea golf course. You will often see them there, especially later afternoon when there are usually a lot around. If you are driving at dusk - night at all you do need to watch out. I missed a kangaroo by just a couple of feet the other day at Anglesea.

We saw the koalas at a campground on the Kennet River.

I'm sure this must be the same spot. Here's an excerpt from my trip report:

We pulled off to follow the signs to Kennett River in hopes of spotting koalas but didn’t have high expectations. Of course, I’d already found a koala butt, and once you’ve seen one …

Immediately after taking the turnoff we saw a tour bus parked on a residential street so we parked to join its passengers who were photographing trees that were teeming with two different types of gorgeous parrots. The parrots were landing on people’s arms—but they were not the star attraction. An adorable koala was resting quite low in the tree—and at just the perfect angle for full, fuzzy-faced photographs. There was no need to continue to Kennett River because we couldn’t possibly get much closer or get better koala photos. I was practically delirious with excitement.

There were countless parrots outside the little store and café at the corner where we’d turned off the GOR and we stopped for a look. A bright red beauty landed on DP’s head and I got a terrific picture. Continuing toward Port Campbell the scenery never stopped putting on a show. We drove right past the Gibson Steps, but luckily, when I noticed the tour buses I backed up. WOW. Gorgeous views of an exquisite beach. I didn’t realize it at the time—but I was seeing two of the famous Twelve Apostles. It was one of my favorite stops...
