Ghan, Indian Pacific trains -- reserve ASAP

Over the years, I've received an enormous amount useful knowledge from the various forums and wanted to pay back a little by giving folks a heads-up to make their reservations the earliest they possibly can for traveling on these trains.

My sister, husband and I are going to Australia for five weeks in September and October this year. We had originally planned on taking the Indian Pacific from Sydney to Perth at the beginning of our trip, fly from Perth to Darwin, then the Ghan from Darwin to Adelaide. We wanted Gold Service cabins with beds for sleeping, rather than sleeping upright in the Red Service seats during the nights. We also wanted to take advantage of the considerable savings of the Advance Purchase fares. "In order to receive the Advance Purchase fare, bookings must be made a minimum of 6 months in advance of travel and are subject to availability."

Earlier this week, when my sister went to make the reservations, she found the Advance Purchase fares for the dates and routes we wanted were sold out. This is nine and ten months away! Fortunately we were able to completely rearrange our schedule and did get AP fares, although on one section of the Ghan (we are breaking our journey and spending a week in Alice) there were only single cabins available for my husband and me.
