from Te Anau, NZ: fly to AKL from Invercargill or Queenstown?

Jump to last reply

At the end of our South Island, NZ self-driving tour, we (me, husband, 2 college age kids) plan to visit Queenstown for 3 nights, then go to Te Anau for 3 nights (and do a trip to Doubtful Sound from there.) My question is: in order to fly back to AKL (for an early evening flight) should we drive south to the Invercargill airport that afternoon, or double back to Queenstown and fly out from there?

Also: Doubtful Sound overnight cruises: are they worth it? Do you see different areas than the day trip options?

Thanks!
