it's about 7 hrs but if I recall we stayed overnight somewhere along the way...in a B&B right on a lake.
We planned our driving so that we were not on the road for long stretches and very rarely after dark. We drove both the north & south islands.
You can do a google search for driving distances in New Zealand and get some ideas. Hope this helps.

It's 301 miles from Queenstown to Christchurch and takes about six hours.
The drive on SH 1 will take you through the Canterbury Plains, which are rather flat and unexciting.
I think the drive will be prettier if you go via Cromwell, Twizel and Lake Tekapo, then pick up SH 1 near Timaru.
If you're not pressed for time, you could always stop overnight along the way somewhere like Lake Tekapo.
Dunedin is out of the way if you're just trying to get from Queenstown to Christchurch. It's an interesting place to visit however.
