Fly into Alice Springs and out of Ayers airport

BarbAnn's right - if all you're doing is driving direct from Alice Springs to Uluru (Ayers Rock), it can be a bit monotonous.
However, there are a number of tours that do the trip with stops at Kings Canyon & other points of interest along the way, making it a unique opportunity of seeing something of Central Australia.

We drove 30 hrs from home to Alice, then to Uluru & another 30 hrs home. The beauty of the ever changing Outback was outstanding. The word monotonous never occurred to me, even on the return trip. I think you need to do some road tripping out there to appreciate the vastness.
