Tahiti has the finest scenery abovewater, while Fiji is better below the surface. Thus you'll appreciate Tahiti more if you're into sightseeing from behind the wheel, while Fiji should be your choice if you're more interested in what can be seen through a mask. The 'best' resorts of French Polynesia tend to be larger, international affairs, while Fiji specializes in small boutique or designer resorts where you might expect to bump into Ringo Starr or Pierce Brosnan. In the budget and medium-price categories you'll get more for your money in Fiji, while the two destinations are comparably priced in the top end bracket. Thus you'll be safer budgeting a slightly longer stay in Fiji than you would in Tahiti.
