Is it safe to travel to Fiji? I've been reading about a unsucessful coup and I'm a bit woried to go there next October on my honeymoon.
Does anyone have any info on that?

That was a long time ago. We were there 2001, August and all was just fine. No worries. Actually you will love it there. The people are very friendly. Just smile and say "Bula" which is their version of "Aloha"

Absolutely no problems with travel to Fiji. The area where the political unrest has occured in the past is around Suva. I'm assuming that you'd be visiting resorts - in which case you'll be completely away from any potential issues or trouble spots. I travelled into Fiji the day after the first coup (back in the mid-90's) and apart from extra security at the airport - you'd never have known that there was a coup going on.

My daughter went to Fiji in June this year. She was with 20 other high school kids and they built 2 houses with Habitat for Humanity, so were not in the main tourist areas, but were turned loose for shopping on their last days. They were overwhelmed by the kindness of the locals and met nothing but nice people. The only problem they had was that Kava is prepared without boiling the water, and a few kids got some odd parasites. Everyone assumed it was safe like tea...
Apparently the recent court decisions on who's in charge did not inflame the locals like in 2001.
Daughter wants us to go back as a family, but it's so hard to re-create some adventures. Think we'll try cook islands instead!
