Familytrip to Thailand (Bangkok + Ko Samet??)

We are a family with two girls (6 and 8 years old) going to Bangkok and evetually Ko Samet 3 1/2
weeks in december. Where is the best place to stay in Bangkok to see the touristic places and to do som shopping and to go to the Zoo without spending all day in traffic jam. Where is the best place to buy silk... Does anyone have experience with travelling with children?
We also planned to go to Ko Samet. Is that an good idea. Should we rather go another place to find nice beaches not to far from Bangkok. Is Ko Samet overcrowded in cristmas??
