Earthquake in Wellington, NZ
I hope all the New Zealand posters are OK in Wellington. There was a 6.5 quake today, but reports so far indicate damage was minor.

Our poor neighbours - terrible thing to happen - I haven't heard any news on damage etc though. Have you noticed susan7 we never heard from kiwirob after the last earthquake in Christchurch? I hope all is okay with him and everyone over there.

Stormbird, my friends in Wellington say the one at 5 pm was scary. When I was there for a conference at Te Papa there was a small one, but I think the small ones happen fairly frequently and Wellington's architecture is well geared up to cope.
I had noticed we haven't heard from kiwirob recently, I hope he is OK.

We felt the one at 5.10pm yesterday, and we are in Nelson at the top of the South Island. It went on for quite a long time, a bit scary but felt much worse in Wellington. Our son, DIL and grandchildren who live in Wellington were actually staying with is for the weekend. They went home this morning. They are hoping there is not much damage when they arrive home. Workers who normally work in the CBD have been asked to work from home if they can while builings are being checked for structural damage.

Hope all our kiwi cousins are ok.
For the geographically challenged US Guardian Express Science reporter .... Wellington is in New Zealand.
Not a suburb of Melbourne!
Gawd help us
The same bright spark reported the quake could be felt in Napier, Western Australia - mere 3376 km away from Melbourne.
Someone please give this clown a map! Don't know what we can do about the lack of common knowledge, common sense. But wouldn't you think a Science Reporter might question why an earthquake that could be felt 3300 kms away from the epicenter had apparently not done much damage?
Probably not if said reporter doesn't have the brainpower to know New Zealand is a country! Ah well...
