We drove all over NZ in June / July in a campervan. the driving conditions were generally pretty good with very little traffic on the roads at that time of year. The weather was naturally extremely variable from clear blue skies to snow and driving rain(believe them when the Kiwis tell you they get 4 seasons in one day).
In general we found the weather to be ok with only two or three occasions when we had to change our plans because of bad weather and that was on the north island. Driving standards are high and the drivers pretty courteous

check www.metservice.com
If you look under Rural they have a seasonal forecasts for the various parts of NZ, but yes wind rain snow sun is likely.
just go by "four seasons in a day".
