Driving from Port Douglas to Cairns airport for 7AM flight

How is the road from PD to Cairns? I have a 7 AM flight and would like to spend the night in PD, but am concerned about driving this stretch so early in the morning. Does one have to watch closely for animals, etc.?

If I remember correctly, it's a curvy road but traffic was light and I didn't see any animals to be concerned about.

btheld - its a well travelled road, about an hour from Cairns airport and animals aren't a problem. Its very scenic so sometimes you're a bit delayed down by tourists slowing down to stare at the view however at 6-7am that shouldn't be a problem.

Bt, If you have a 7 am flight you probably have to be at the airport around six, which means you must depart PD at around 04.30 which means you must be in bed really early which means you must really like punishment.

Would it not be a better idea to check your car into the Car return in Cairns the night before and just take a ten minute cab ride to the airport from your Cairns Hotel and enjoy a descent nights sleep.

As far as the scenery from PD to CS at 5 in the morning goes. Forget it.
It will be dark

sorry, I misread your arrival time as time you need to be at airport, an hour before departure and longer if you're on an international flight. Yobfeer is indeed correct, it will dark at that hour.

As already mentioned , the stretch of road from Port Douglas to say about Palm Cove is very twist, hilley and only two lanes. It will be dark and I would drive carefully. Once you get to around Palm Cove the road flattens (and straightens) out. And it will become a four lane. I would allow about 1 to 1 /2 hours to drive it, then factor in how much time at the airport. Are you returning a rental car? If so, that'll take some extra time.
