Check out these airline prices

Australia is a hot destination during Christmas and New Year's and unfortunately the airfare prices get hot, too.

Leaving the United States on Dec. 15 and returning on January 1, here are some prices from www.itasoftware.com.

From Miami, United was the cheapest at $2094 with stops in Orlando and LAX with a total flying time of 24 hours.

British Airways and Qantas came in second with $2117 with stops in London and Singapore and a flying time of 34 hours.

American Airlines came in third at $2239 but once at LAX, one is on a Qantas plane. Flight time was 25 hours.

Air New Zealand came in fourth at $2639

Air Tahiti was $6151, Japan Airlines was $6253 and US Airways was $6382 with a United Code Share.

From New York City to Sydney, British Airways was the cheapest going through London and Singapore on Qantas for a 29 hour flight. ($1846)

Emirates was second at $1958 going through DXB with a 29-hour flight.

United was third at $2061 going west through LAX with a flight time of 28 hours.

China Airlines was $2235, Air Tahiti was $2331, Malaysia Airlines was $2344, Koren Air was $2452, Asiana was $2530, Air New Zealand wasa $2701, Air Canada was 2714 and Cathay Pacific was $3329 for coach seating.

First class seats are around $25,000!

You are correct about being pricy during Xmas/New Years. I just got off the phone with Qantas. We're planning on leaving LAX to SYD Dec 18 or so and return first week in Jan (approx 17 day vacation). Total cost including flight to Adelaide and Cairns is $2367 USD per person.

PS I was actually hoping to use FF miles for 2 of the tickets - non-existant during that timeframe. This will end up being an outrageously expensive trip for a family of four!

I wish we could travel at another time! Unfortunately we can only vacation when kids off school.

If you live on the East Coast, taking BA to London could be cheaper.

Unfortunately we live in LAX area so it wouldn't make sense to travel through London and we are limited on time.

I am now considering taking my kids out of school for 8 days during Thanksgiving Break (giving us a 15-16 day trip) or leaving January 1 and taking an additional week. I still have to contact Qantas for quotes on this timeframe. But upon checking their website the fare dropped significantly.

I just choke on spending close to $10,000 USD for 4 airline tickets over Christmas holidays!!

Wow- now I feel that we got a great deal. It was approximately $4400 total for two from MSP-LAX-SYD-CHC; DUD-CHC-AKL-NAN-LAX-MSP
If anyone reading this is under 26, a student, or a parent of a student, I strongly suggest you call STA Travel at 1-800-781-4040. They gave Tim the student rate too as he is my spouse.
Good luck, everyone! No matter what the price, it will be worth it.

I'm sure you must have a reason to go during Christmas - aren't your kids out of school in the summer? It's about half the cost then - I just got two tickets on Air NZ for about $1100 each for May/June. I get the school vacation thing - I'm an academic - but you'd have cooler weather in Queensland and not deal with the school hols for Oz too....

I second OliverandHarry-go in the summer, Oz winter. I've been to Oz the past 4 years in July and AUgust and it's not that bad. This past summer I was walking around in a t-shirt! The weather is cooler but it's more like East Coast autumn. You'll need a jacket a night but that's it. No snow, little rain. Either that or I've just had great luck but winter in Sydney is not like winter here in NYC. My friend is from sydney and she just told me that it's really really hot there in the summers, plus in the summer (ours) the kids should have 2 months off, right? Just don't go the first 2 weeks in July as that is the Aussie school holiday but otherwise everywhere is so much less crowded and it's still beautiful!

When I toured from Cairns to Sydney in 2001 I wore shorts and a t-shirt everywhere except in Sydney and this was July.
