Cape Reinga Tours

We will be going to NZ for 4 weeks in February and will have a rental car however it was suggested that we take a bus tour from Bay of Islands (where we will be staying in Paihia) to Cape Reinga. Since it is high season, do we need to book ahead? Is there a tour company that anyone is familiar with that they can specifically recommend?
