Campervan or car plus B&Bs

We are proceeding to NZ south island for our Honeymoon in the 1st half of December (1st to 17th Dec).

We would like to have inputs from people on this forum who have used both campervans as well as cars plus B&Bs, comparing & contrasting them, and suggesting either option's suitability for a honeymoon.

Other specific questions:

1. Can we park our campervans anywhere we like (say by the roadside) for the night? Will that be illegal? Or are there are specific designated sites for the same? And do these incur any additional costs? Will such sites not be rather too crowded?

2. Campervans will give us complete freedom to roam about anywhere without a worry about 'where are we staying tonight' (or so I am assuming!), but will it be fast enough to move between places? Do they limit our ability to move between 'attractions' fast enough?

3. Another cost that might be incurred might be because of lesser fuel efficiency. How much of a difference is it in cost terms on a daily basis, say for an average 200 to 300 kms covered per day?

4. Is it too much of a 'driving' experience? Do you feel jaded and 'oh back to the same bloody vehicle' kind of feeling??

Look forward to hearing all about your experiences, with details and innovative ideas thrown in for good measure.
