Cairns to Sydney early 2017
Hi
I am travelling alone in Australia from December 2016 until February 2017. I am aiming to be in Cairns about 28th December 2016 and then have until 31st January to get to Sydney. Your advice please, is the hop on hop off bus a good way to do the trip and what is your advice for must see stop offs along the way??
Thanks
Jo

There's no hop on hop off bus that travels from Cairns to Sydney. Are you discussing the hop on hop off pass that some bus company has? If so, the value of it is directly proportional to the value you place on the stops you can hop off at.
And if you cannot state your interests, how can we advise you what to see or do?

Sorry, new to this! I am interested in walks, forests, wildlife, scuba diving, sailing, horse riding, beaches and beach life, chilling out, views, small towns not cities, meeting people, motorbikes.
I am trying to decided how to travel and if there is a bus company that travels down the coast road so I can stop off perhaps at Townsville, Mackay, Coolengatta, Hervey for Frazer island and onto Byron Bay for example? Or the other places you advise to see.
Appreciate any ideas or advice.

Have a look at Greyhound - they have a fare that allows you to stop here & there.
There may be others - and probably one of the backpacker websites would be a better resource for this type of travel info than Fodors.
As to where to stop, have a look at the FAQs here and the Visit Queensland & Visit NSW websites. You might also have a look at the TimeOut & What's on websites for various locations to see any festivals that may coincide with your visit.
No doubt you know you'll be in Cairns in cyclone & stinger season - but once you get to Rockhampton, you should be out of the stinger zone.
Best accommodation will probably be in YHAs, and there are some in fabulous locations - or local pubs in country towns. Book ahead where you can - or be very flexible. You're travelling at the height of our summer school holidays - and lots of the rest if us take our holidays then, too.

Joqui I wouldn't have Rockhampton on my list. Airlie beach would have better things to see as it is part of the Whitsunday Island area. Easy access for diving and sailing.
As said above it is peak holiday time and Fraser Island will be very busy with campers. School starts back at the end of January so you will have a month of peak costs for accommodations and very hot weather with high humidity in the coastal areas.
