Broome to Cape Leveque

Broome to Cape Leveque
Hoping to travel from the USA in May, 2015 to what will be our 7th trip to Australia since the early 1980's. We obviously love this country. The beginning of our adventure will be up in the NT. We were in Darwin in the mid 1980's and I'm sure there has been a lot of change.
Ultimately, we will fly from Kununurra to Broome where we will spend a few days before heading to Perth. We will have a car rental in order to get around and thought about heading north, up to Cape Leveque. I know accommodations are limited up there and since it requires a 2 night minimum stay (is there enough to do for 2 nt stay?), we considered instead booking a tour that would take us up there and allows for a 1 night stay. That way we wouldn't have to worry about flat tires, etc. How rough is the road if you've driven on it in recent years? What sights are must sees enroute and will we spot any wildlife?
Has anyone been up this way and is it worth the drive? Have you stayed at the Koolmajan Resort and if so, what did you think of the accommodations? Was considering the deluxe safari tents or the ensuite cabins. Was wondering if anyone has had experience with either.
Last, has anyone ever used Chomley's Tours? They're the ones offering the overnight option. Have you used other companies for this tour?
If you have any great suggestions for in and around Broome, we would appreciate it.

thanks Melnq8. I've read all of your TR's and done a lot of my planning based on them. I was hoping you had been to this area. Thought I had read something awhile back but couldn't find it. Will try TA at your suggestion.

this may be too late but...
I have been to Broome a few times, the road is unsealed for about 80km (from memory) but is regularly traveled and usually in ok condition, the shire fixes it each year after wet season. I last drove on the road to Cape Leveque in March last year and had no problems.
When you say enough to do for a 2 night stay what are you hoping/ planning to do? There is a nice Church in near by Beagle Bay to attend, and its a nice place to relax.
Another option for a place to stay if you only want to stay over night is Lombadina www.lombadina.com they also do tours, so if you were staying at Cape Leveque you could go for a fishing or mud crabbing tour.

I must have missed this post as I visit Broome at least twice a year -family!
Cape Leveque is the most beautiful beach I have seen. Have travelled this road many times.The swimming is wonderful.
I haven't stayed at Cape Levque but some of my family have and the loved it. I have stayed at Lombardina for 3 night s in cabins and loved the experience.-mudcrabbing, fishing, swimming-all done with community guides.
Another place I have visited on the way up is Mercedes Cove where we stayed in the eco tents -excellent with great views over the Indian ocean -small place but great.
Beagle Bay with its unusual church is worth visiting on the way up.
The road varies and is not sealed most of the way and often very rutted so requires 4 wheel drive vehicle and places like Mercedes Cove are off an even rougher road. The road can vary at that time of year depending on how late the wet continues but should be open in May.
If hiring a 4 wheel drive you have to specifically tell them you want to drove out of Broome . Many are not covered for out of Broome and definitely not for driving on the beach.
If you only have a short time a tour sounds good.
Re wildlife you wont see much on land but maybe whales at Whalesong near Mercedes Cove, or maybe a croc in the water.
