Brisbane to Sydney

Hello

I am planning to fly from Melbourne to Brisbane. I will rent a car from Brisbane to Sydney or all the way back to Melbourne. If I had a choice of driving from 1. Brisbane to Sydney or 2. Sydney to Melbourne. Which would be better? Or would it be better to drive from Brisbane to Melbourne? How much time should I allow for driving and sight seeing along the way?
Thanks for the help
Eric

Hi Eric,

What is your timeframe like ? The best route would depend on how much time you have.

Cheers

Eric,
If you have lots of time, you will see a lot more driving rather than flying but it would take about 2-3 days of solid driving (not stopping other than for petrol,to grab some food and sleep) to get from Melb to Brisbane. That's driving ALL day.
Generally, the coastal route is more attractive but takes longer.
The drive from Melb to Sydney along the coast is lovely in parts, but I'd allow at least 3 or 4 days absolute minimum, and even then you won't have time to stop and see much along the way.
Check out www.travelmate.com.au and look at the map planner section to see the mileage and travel times. Hope this helps.
Kay

Hi

I have driven between brisbane and sydney and unfortunately for much of the 4 hours north of sydney, you dont really see any ocean althought there are many beautiful places off the freeway. I remember the drive south of brisbane down throught eh gold coast and on was beautiful though.

Judging from everyone's posts, it seems that a 2-3 day drive is the minimum you would allocate for travel between Brisbane and Sydney. 1.) Would 2 days be way too rushed. 2.) I notice that it's about 1000 km between the 2 cities! That seems quite a lot of concrete. What are the roads like? Highway or small towns?

Brisbane to Sydney is an enjoyable drive, with pretty good 4-lane divided highway most of the way. If forced to choose, I think its a better drive than Melbourne - Sydney.
In pure driving time, its about 10 hours (not including stops). Most travellers will break up the trip with an overnight stop on the way, but thats without much sightseeing.
You don't see a great deal by sticking to the highway but there are some fantastic spots off the highway along the way. Heading south from Brisbane some recommendations would be the Gold Coast, Byron Bay, Yamba, Coffs Harbour, Dorrigo National Park area (inland from Coffs Hbr), South West Rocks, Port Macquarie, Forster (Myall lakes) area, Port Stephens and then Sydney.
You could spend a week or 2 quite easily but need at least 3 to 4 days to do the drive some justice.
