Bora Bora vs Bali

I'm currently in the process of planning my honeymoon and have narrowed down my potential honeymoon destinations to Bora Bora and Bali. Does anyone have any thoughts which would be the better destination? Also, this may be a bad idea, but would it be possible to do both during a three week honeymoon? Thanks for any advice.

Pat-
I went to Bora Bora and Moorea on my Honeymoon 3 years ago. Bora Bora is great but I wouldn't stay there longer than 1 week. The island is very small (we biked around it in 2 hours)and you can only do so many activities. The water and beaches are beautiful and the people are very friendly. If you do go, make sure you stay in a hut over the water. Most, if not all, of the hotels have these. Also, you must go Shark Feeding--a great adrenaline booster.

Bora Bora is limited for an extended period of time and it is not easy to get from there elsewhere. We have not been to Bali but we have been to Bora Bora three times. I think I would pick Bali. They have wonderful places to stay at less cost. You can have an adventure by moving to other areas that you will always remember. Also, you will have a cultural experience that is wider than you will find in the Tahiti area. You are young and it is time to reach out. One year long ago we went to two Rock resorts at Caneel Bay and Little Dix, from there to the Dominican Republic, and then to Haiti. What we really remember today was our time in Haiti. This was an experience that we will never forget. What is improtant in life is what you share together. Who wants it to be always easy?

Haiti?!? Memorable? What was memorable about it -- all the poverty, filth and disease?!? You have alot of GALL even comparing it to gorgeous Bora-Bora!!!

I have been to both Bora Bora and Bali on seperate occasions, of course. They are so different that it depends on what you want to experience. Bora Bora is the quintessential South Pacific island. Warm water, tropical, gorgeous lagoon, powder sugar beaches, etc. As far as activities, the scuba diving is not that great since the water isn't very clear. You can take a Land Rover tour up the mountain and see the guns left behind from WWII, go on a shark feed (sort of boring if you've already dived with the sharks on Rangiroa), swim, relax, etc. A good place for a few days of R&R but not a whole lot to do. It's also obscenely expensive! Five years ago, a beer was $8, mixed drink was $12 and a hamburger was $15. Nothing to buy there except for south sea pearls ($$$$) and pareos.

Bali, on the other hand, is not the place you go if all you want to do is lie on the beach and relax. It is so full of culture and beautiful scenery that it would be a total waste to just lay around the beach all day. You must tour the island, see the interior (there are also beautiful resort in the interior), watch the parades, view the temples, go to the monkey forest, scuba dive, and shop for gorgeous stone and wood sculptures. Stay out of Kuta if you hate tourist traps. A few years it was so affordable, that 2 people could eat like kings for about $20 a day. If you stay at the luxury resort like the Four Seasons, however, be prepared to be price gouged on food as well as the room. If you have time, fly to Jogjarkta on Java and go to Borobodur, an ancient Buddist temple that is one of the 7 wonders of the world. The people of Indonesia are very sweet but many are very poor so don't be surprised to see poverty while there.

I would go back to Indonesia in a heartbeat. While I liked the Society Islands (Tahiti, Bora Bora, Moorea, Raeitea, Huahine), I wouldn't rush back there.

It is nice to read a posting from sombody that sees the world as it really is and who can both accept and enjoy it. For the honeymooners the answer is easy if they have not already gone. If they want to discover each other for the first time, go to Bora Bora. If they want to discover something about the rest of the world go to Bali and Indonesia. They will come back with new ideas that will carry them through life and with money in their pockets if they stay away from the top resorts. That is what I was really trying to get across in my first posting.

Having been to both, I would go to Tahiti hands down over Bali. Agree with the previous poster.
