best sites to see in Melbourne

I will be traveling to Melborurne with a team in August. What are the best local sites that one must see? Is there anything that I should bring with me, that one would not ordinarly bring?

Gwen,

Take a trip to Albert Park if you get the chance. Also check out the shopping, and the cafes. Melbourne is famous for both, and both are great!

Gwen, here are two URLs to help you find info on Melbourne. http://melbourne.citysearch.com.au/ and also www.theage.com.au
make sure you visit the Healesville Wild Life sanctuary where recently twin platypuses were born and catch a ferry across the bay and visit the marintime village of Williamstown. Peg.

Dear Gwen,

Ok yes it will be chilly but there is heaps to see in Melbourne.

Catch the city circle tram for a FREE tour around the city. Tour the wonderful MCG a must for any sports fan. Go to the Queen Victoria Market for a bit of bargain shopping (make sure you are there early). Visit Chapel St, Southbank Complex, The National tennis centre, Albert Park, The shrine of rememberane,

If you are able to travel out of the city its self head off to the Dandenong Ranges, Geelong, The great Ocean Road, Bright, the MOrnington and Bellarine Penninsulas, Philip Island and heaps of other places.

Good luck
Janet

August is mid Winter so it will be cold (about 13 celsius). There are plenty of sites close to the city to see - Southgate (Sunday market), the beautiful botanical gardens, catch the ferry to Williamstown (also Sunday craft market), Victoria markets, Brunswick Street shops and for longer trips The Great Ocean Road, the townships of Ballarat (Sovereign Hill)and the village of Maldon which is classified by the National Trust. Have a great time.

Even if you are not a sports fan, you must try to see an Australian Rules Football match, preferably at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. No need to book, just front up about an hour before the match is due to start.

Enjoy your trip.

Melbourne sites. If you love old buildings - Werribee Park (also a great safari type zoo there), Old Melbourne gaol (gruesome), a night trip out on the bay to see the city lights, lunch in the restaurant in the Fitzroy Gardens, afternoon tea at the Windsor, The Casino and Southgate, a walk through Melbourne University, the list is endless. So much to enjoy......
