Australia/New Zealand "Self-directed" Travel
Florida couple in early retirement would like to casually tour the land of OZ and New Zealand over a 30 day period in October, 1998. We would like to find a Point of Contact or Travel Agency to coordinate self-directed travel and tours. We prefer the "low-key" travel approach rather than the crowded pre-programed packaged tours. Any suggestions or contacts would be very nice.

Hi there. I would suggest you contact the New Zealand Tourist Bureau who could give you loads of booklets and pamphlets on things to do and see (in your own time and speed). Thomas Cook are very helpful. If coming to NZ avoid winter - it's wet and miserable. October of course is the start of our spring. The Far North of the North Island has 90 mile beach, the Bay of Islands (great launch trips around the Bay which last several hours), Auckland City for shopping, then onto Rotorua to see geysers, mud pools, etc. Taupo for the lake and just south of that, three volcanoes - only one partially alive and kicking sometimes. The South island has some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world with fjiords, plains, mountains, rivers, etc. Bring plenty of film - you will need it.
Have a great holiday!

Swain Australia is a United States based travel agency that specializes in South Pacific travel. My husband and I have just come back from Australia and we booked through Swain. We enjoyed the entire trip (except Qantas is unreliable) and I would recommend talking with Swain. We met other people from the States that booked through them as well. If you want their number or any other information feel free to write!
