Susie,

I am unsure if there is a mechanism in place for this you might want to pose the question to either the ACCC or the Australian Tax Office to get a definitive response their websites are:
www.ato.gov.au
www.accc.gov.au

Hope this helps

Susie,

Since my previous post I have done some diging around and came up with this answer from the Australain Tax Office and I quote:
29. Tourist refund scheme

Q: What are the details of the Tourist Refund Scheme ?

A: Details will be available shortly on the Tourist Refund scheme.

30. Goods and services consumed in Australia by overseas visitors

Q: If an international visitor purchases tourism products in Australia, are they able to make any claim back on the GST paid ?

A: There is no refund for GST included in the price of goods and services consumed in Australia. For example meals, hotel accommodation and rail or coach travel.

Under Div 168 of the GST Act - the Tourist refund scheme - tourists may be entitled to a refund of all or some of the GST included in the price of goods they purchased in Australia and take home with them as accompanied baggage.

As you can see Susie there appears to be no mechanism for this refund at present, maybe when the dust starts to settle on this new GST system our government might spell out their tourist refund policy a little better but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for it.

Cheers

Some info became available today - it seems that you can only claim a refund of GST if the item you purchase is over $300 including GST.

If you want to claim it back, you get an invoice from the seller, take it to a special desk in departures and they will give you a refund on the spot.

Does that mean each item value $300. or is it a total of purchases over $300?

My understanding of the arrangements is that you have to soend at least $300 in any one participating store (not necessarily on the one item) within 30 days of leaving Oz and that you have to carry the goods out of Australia with you.
You get the refund at the airport if you produce your tax invoice (receipt), the goods, your passport and Boarding pass.
