Hi, you don't say whether you need a single or double.

If it's the former the Y Hotel is offering rooms at $72 shared facilities or $110 ensuite. It's central-ish (certainly within walking distance of the major tourist sights).

Don't have url to hand but you can take a look at www.hotelclub.com.au

Or there's the Glenferrie Lodge.

http://www.glenferrielodge.com

That's just two possibilities. I've stayed at neither though a friend who is fairly fussy stays at the Y, and the Glenferrie with its balconies (and location) would tempt me were I looking for what you are looking for!

Cheers.

I've had good reports on Hotel 59, current rates are AUD$88 a single or AUD$110-$121 a double including breakfast. www.hotel59.com.au

Nelsonian,

Do you need to be central? This lodge in Balmain is very cheap $75 per night, some friends from Finland stayed here the studios are very clean and neat and there's lots of places to eat nearby.

To get to the city there's either the bus (takes about 5 minutes over the Anzac Bridge) or the ferry (approx. 10 minutes)

Wow - a post recommending the Balmain Lodge.

OP - good advice from Susan though I wouldn't have dared to give it. I believe the deal is one bathroom shared between two rooms.

Balmain is a fascinating part of inner Sydney. No trains but you can take the ferry or the bus to the City.

Another one you could check is:

This is at the top of George St.

I think I'd rather stay in Balmain or Kirribilli - but the decision is up to you.

The March edition of Australian Gourmet Traveller has a little feature on about 5 boutique Hotels in Sydney most of which are quite new . I have never heard of most of them amd all are more than $100 a night but I recall one that is around $159 . I do not have the magazine with me otherwise I would list them for everyones benefit now but will perhaps do a separate post this weekend so people can check them out for themselves as they read very well .

also check around north sydney
easy to get into the city by train ..and a lot cheaper ...artarmon...north sydney...cremorne...milsons point
the heart of sydney ...i dont know..feels dirty to me anyway...so it might be nicer to be a tiny bit out but still very convenient with restaurants
some great restaurants in crows nest and you wont pay the earth

If you are staying more than 4 or 5 days - rent a furnished apartment in the city. Many available by internet. And you can find a nice apt. for $100 a night.
