ANTARTICA - holiday info please

We usually holiday in Tuscany and want something
really different! Why not Antartica? When's best time to go. How do we get there from Melbourne, Australia. Where do we stay once there. What do we see and do once there. How many days do we need. Any hints etc. Thanks!

Jules, I am surprised at your request as your email address indicates an Australian Address. You should be aware that you cannot stay in Antartica. It is a protected environment and only government workers are alloed to stay there usually for 6 to 12 month periods.

If you want to QANTAS has flights which overfly it and it takes about 12 hours.

Jules,
mick is right and wrong, Qantas does fly over it, but hardly worth it. There are a number of cruises departing from both Hobart and South America - I have heaps of info - so get in touch with me direct - I have been planning for some time and it's taken ages to track down different options. Exoensive YES, but once in a lifetime. Cruises range from 7 - 30 days, are a wonderful oppurtunity with minimal damage to the environment, YES antarctic waters have strict guidelines and so do passenger ships. Perhaps one shouldn't be travelling to possibly the last pristine place on Earth, but some cruises take every precaution in preserving the environment.
Contact me direct and I'll scan/send you some info - I'm am heading away 98/99 season .

I found a couple of Antartica cruises at a site called the Adventure Finder, they will send more info and brochures etc. The page is at:

http://www.greentravel.com/refer/uktravel/xnet

Jules: World Cruise Lines has an around the world cruise that is 4 mos. in length and costs less than $20,000. You can go for portions of it and the cost covers airfare. It is going to Antartica in January 2000. The internet address is www.worldcruise.com. Going for a portion that includes Antartica would be much less than a cruise just to Antartica. You will see how they live down there and lots of ice floes.
Most of the Antarctica tours depart from Ushuaia Port (Argentina). It seems that the cheaper alternative is to sail the russian vessels(scientific vessels). There are another operators who have bigger and comfortable cruises, but the experience is also amazing.
From Chile(Puerto Williams) you can take a sailboat for adventure excursions to Antarctica.
For specific information do not hesitate to contact me.
