Advice for 5 days north of Cairns

Jump to last reply

Thanks everyone for the advice on my last post about the overall itinerary. I think I've settled into something workable for us, although I still have one day that may change depending on availability of accommodations and tours: Day 1: Arrive Darwin, Days 2-4: Top End sightseeing, Day 5: fly to Cairns around 1:30pm, Days 6-9: sightseeing N. of Cairns, Day 10: Fly to Tasmania (9:20am), Days 11-16: Tasmania, Days: 17-21, Sydney and environs.

At this point I would appreciate help for "N. of Cairns". I'd like to have one day touring the Atherton Tablelands (unfortunately Alan Gilanders is not available, hoping for other suggestions), one day on the GBR (non-diving trip), rainforest, Mossman Gorge. But I'm having a difficult time figuring out distances and travel time between places to tour and therefore where to stay. I'd like to stay no more than 2 different places.

I was thinking about Silky Oaks Lodge for the last 3 nights (can't stay there on day 1, they are fully booked, they do have a package with a GBR tour and a rainforest tour). It seems doable to get from there to Cairns airport for the early morning flight. If that works/make sense, does anyone have a suggestion for first two nights that convenient to Tablelands? I don't want to stay in Cairns but it seems silly to stay in two different places very close together unless they are very different experiences.

If we don't stay at Silky Oaks, would need guide suggestions for these areas and how to "group" the activities. I realize that many people do these places on their own but we need guides - - probably for two full days. We don't want to stay at a beach resort (we live in the Caribbean much of the year so we are not looking for a beach experience).
Thanks again.
