48 hours in NZ North Island- tips?

We have 48 hours in NZ North Island after our 17 day South Island adventure. Dates are Oct 22-24.

Does anyone have recommendations for must-see things to do in that short of a time period? We are willing to stay outside of Auckland, since our flight is later in the day on the 24th.

Thoughts: Hobbiton, Rotorua, but very open to ideas!

Thanks!

I'm not a city person by any stretch, but we enjoyed our 1/2 day at the Sky Tower in downtown Auckland.

With only 48 hours, I can't help but think you'd do best o stick to the Auckland area...loads to see and do in the vicinity. After 17 days on the SI, I'm guessing you'll be ready for a break from driving.

Some ideas here:

You can do Hobbiton in a day trip - www.bushandbeach.co.nz.
If you are a LOTR fan you will love Hobbiton. Peter Jackson has done an amazing job of creating the village.
Head to Waiheke for something closer to Auckland particularly if you are staying in downtown Auckland. Chill on the beach, have lunch at a winery or do some ziplining (flying fox)there is plenty to do there.

You could visit the Waitakere Ranges. Lots of wild beaches, waterfalls, short hikes there. Also the Gannett colony at Muriwai. Wineries at Kumeu.

In addition to the great suggestions above, you could go to Tiritiri Matangi by ferry from Auckland if you are into birding. Also Rangitoto Island by ferry. Both islands are predator free and you need to bring your own food and drink in sealed containers (daypack works). Book ahead, especially for Tiritiri Matangi, and take the $5 guided tour. bring binoculars

A nice afternoon could be spent in Devonport, a ten minute ferry from downtown Auckland. Walk up Mt. Victoria and Northhead for great views.

Hi Nknows,

Rotorua is good for a quite visit because it is small and easy to get around. You can see a lot in 48 hours while you are there, the hot springs, Maori cultural display, amazing forestry just 5 KM's from the center of town.
I agree with the other posters that you will probably have to stay in the Auckland area, but if you can get there it would be well worth it.

Thank you
