Yi Peng Festival - Chiang Mai Expert

My husband and I are planning a trip to Chiang Mai for the November 2016 Yi Peng and Loy Krathong festival.

I am hoping to book my hotel soon but am not able to find firm dates for the celebration.

Right now I am planning to check in on November 12th and Check out on November 16th.

Questions/Comments:

1.Do my dates sound about right?
2.When will the dates be confirmed?
3.How do you get tickets for the mass lantern release at Mae Jo University? Is this worth going to or is it better to stay in the city of Chiang Mai?
4.What are recommendations for most convenient hotel locations? And hotel recommendations? 137 Pillars looks awesome but is across the river... will this be hard to visit all the Wats?

Please let me know if you have any other recommendations.

Loy Krathong in Chiang Mai will be November 14-16. You will see celebrations all over Thailand. The location of 137 Pillars is just fine. You will no doubt hire a car and driver for your time in Chiang Mai anyway.

Any chance you can move a couple of your CM days to Angkor? The 12-16 in Cm is way more time than you need there, whereas one day at Angkor is insufficient to see even just the major temples at Angkor.

Kathie. Thank you for your reply.

I have provided a rough itinerary please let me know what you think. If the festival if November 14-16. Would that mean that Yi Peng is on the 14th and Loy Krathong is on the 15?

Check-In on November 12th at 11:00pm (we are taking a late flight from Bangkok that evening) so this wont really be a day in Chiang Mai.

November 13th - One full day Chiang Mai
Elephant experience
Sunday Market

November 14th - Two full day Chiang Mai
Wat touring
Lantern Release

November 15th- Three full day Chiang Mai
Cooking School
Wat touring
Loy Krathrong

November 16th- Husbands Tree house Night (or do we need to be in Chiang Mai City this night too?)
Check in to a tree house hotel (my husband is very excited about this )

November 17th- Head to Krabi
Check out of the treehouse and head to Krabi

_____
We currently have
5 full days in Krabi
and 2 half days in Krabi
___

I would be up for shortening a day in Krabi and adding an additional day in Angkor? Would this be a good idea or should we keep the day in Krab?

Sorry for all my questions.

A quick google search turned up this schedule of events in CM:
http://www.chiangmai-alacarte.com/lo...-november-2016

Note that there are likely to be few of these events you will want to attend.

If you want an elephant experience, you have to choose carefully as most of these elephant camps abuse the elephants - you can see gashes from the use of hooks. The place I recommend is the Elephant Nature Park - you will need to make reservations in advance.

Make sure you get to Doi Suthep, a lovely wat on a hilltop outside of CM.

If it was me, I'd take a day from Krabi to add to Angkor. But it's your trip, do what is most important to you.

Kathie,

You are so awesome!

What are your thoughts about The Chai Lai Orchid Elephant group?

We will definitely do Doi Suthep! It looks stunning.

Do you know anything about the "Mass Lantern Release" or how to get tickets for it? My girlfriend went last year for the Yi Peng festival and couldn't figure out how to get to the big Mass Release. I have read that it is a separate event from Loy Krathong in Chiang Mai.

Do you have a favorite area in Chiang Mai to stay that is a convenient location to everything?

I don't know the Chai Lai Orchid Elephants Group, but unless you can find a review by an animal welfare group giving it a good rating, I'd avoid it and all the other commercial places. Another apace that is good is the Thai Elephant Conservation Center near Lampang.

I don't know much about the "Mass Lantern Release" but the concierge at your hotel should be able to help.

My favorite area of Chiang Mai is Bangkok - lol. I am not a fan of Chiang Mai, despite a number of visits there since the mid-1980s. But some people love the place. There really is no in-town location for a hotel that would be truly inconvenient. Stay at the place that appeals to you. CM has no public transport which is what makes the traffic so bad and contributes to the air pollution. But your driver can get you to where you want to go.

I saved these links in case I ever go. Not sure how accurate they are, but it's a start:

Wat Doi Suthep has a great location, but is infested with unsavory elements including masses of touring mainland chinese, who have very little respect for local feelings or culture. After all, in the mind of every chinese, china is oldest and best culture: all others inferior.
