Yangon & Bagan - Travel Agent or Independently?

Guys,

We are going to Yangon and Bagan in February and we would like to have some opinions about doing everything independently or hiring a travel agent to help with all the tours and internal tickets..

What is your experience?

Thank you!

Having had replies on your other two threads, have you got an itinerary coming together that you could share?

We had 3 weeks in Myanmar in February/march 5 years ago. All I'd booked in advance were return flights between Bangkok and Yangon, and our first 4 nights accommodation [Summit Parkview Hotel] in the country [in Yangon]. I had an idea of where we where we wanted to visit in the country, but no firm idea of how were were going to travel around.

In the taxi [Golden Swallow Transport] from Yangon Airport to our hotel the taxi driver quizzed us about what our plans were and how long we had. In that 30 minute taxi ride we dicided to hire him for a day and show us the countryside around Yangon.....basically to test him out and judge whether to hire him for a couple of weeks.

He gave us a great one day tour, and as as well as a good driver he also knew his country and its history. So at the end of that day he took us back to his company office in Yangon [www.exoticmyanmartravel.com]. We worked out a reasonably flexible itinerary covering 2 weeks, and agreed a price.

We had a great time on the road, taking in Taungoo, Bagan, Mandalay, Pyin oo Lwin, Kalaw, Inle Lake, Kalaw again, and Taungoo again. Plus we saw a whole lot in between.

Are you only going to Yangon and Bagan? How much time do you have in Myanmar? Form your other threads, I'm wondering if you are trying to cover too many places in too little time.

If you want to go to Myanmar, do at least visit Inle Lake as well as Bagan and Yangon. You will need a minimum of a week. If you don't have a week, skip Myanmar.

Tourism has increased vastly in the last few years in Myanmar, so you will want to be prepared by having reservations most places. You can do everything independently, but you may want to use an agent to book hotels and flights. You really don't need a guide anywhere.

I agree with Kathie. Inle Lake and Bagan are magical. I felt like I was in a National Geographic documentary when I was there a few years ago.

When we went to Inle [February],it was burning season, so the views were often hidden by a blue curtain.
