Don't really understand the question. You get whichever gauge exists for the journey you're taking. Can't say I've noticed any difference myself, aside of course with the mountain railways like narrow gauge for Darjeeling or broad gauge for Shimla. And what "high speed rail"?
Anurag, you're pulling our leg right? Where in India is there a high speed train and who cares what gauge the rail is?
Actually, it's sort of comical to think of a bullet train tearing through the village outposts at 200 MPH! Would never happen in India.
Ask the Spaniards and Russians.
India's 100mph Shatabdi and Rajdhani expresses run on Indian broad gauge, wider than European/American standard gauge.
The metre-gauge network is slower, much already converted to broard gauge.
The toy trains to Darjeeling and Simla definitely aren't high speed. But who cares, they're great...
Perhaps the OP is considering building a new HS line and needs our considered engineering opinion?
Maybe the Queensland,Australia wide gauge of 3 ft 6 inches.?
The Victoria, Australia gauge of 5 ft 3 in?
The standard gauge seems to work just fine for Japan and other countries with High Speed Rail.
