Where to Stay - Hong Kong or Kowloon?
I realise this is a topic that crops up often and I apologise in advance for repeating a topic BUT we're planning our first trip to Hong Kong as a 5 day stopover on our return from Europe mid next year and I would like some up to date opinions on where it's best to stay - on Hong Kong Island or in Kowloon? We're looking at around a $200-250 p/n budget or of course cheaper if that's possible.
If you've been there recently or are a frequent visitor to Hong Kong then I'd really like to hear your opinion and some recommendations on which Hotel in which area you prefer.
Thanks in advance for helping out.

Really doesn't matter along as it's near the MTR subway, as somewhere between Sheung Wan and Fortress Hill on the Island Line, or between Tsim Sha Tsui and Mong Kok on the Tsuen Wan Line.
It's one stop and 4 minutes on the MTR to cross the harbor, and train runs every 2-3 minutes.

Oz I am off to Hong Kong in 3 weeks. Staying at the Salisbury Hotel. It seems to always get decent reviews with a budget price. I will let you know what it was like when I get back.
It fills up fast so you need to book early though.

The YMCA is always a safe bargain bet. Excellent location in TST just next to the famous Peninsula Hotel and Sheraton and literally a minute walk from the Star Ferry and bus terminal as well as convenient MTR access.

I visit Hong Kong often enough to tell you that Kowloon side is more fun. But HK is small and public tranport on MTR, buses are efficient and of course the Star Ferry is the coolest public transport ride you can ever do anywhere in the world. I presume your budget is in USD. I always stay at the Holiday Inn Golden Mile along Nathan Road. You can get great hotels about USD $200 per night. There is an MTR entrance nest to it and walking along Nathan Road you can get up to Mong Kok, Jordan on foot with wall to wall shopping and eating. You can also take the MTR inot China for a day of cheap shopping and tailors in Shenzhen! Check out the Agoda rates for hotels.

Oz just got back from staying at the YMCA and the only downside for me was the mattresses are very hard.
We had a great view of the harbour in our suite and its location makes it great for getting around Hong Kong with little effort.
Hong Kong is fabulous. Hope you enjoy.

This time I stayed at the Ibis in NorthPoint at $75 usd a night. Not a fan but for the price, it was a good value. The A11 bus from the airport is 65 hkd rt and ends at the NorthPoint bus terminal which is where the hotel is. Expect a 1hr and 15 minute journey. The MTR is right next to the hotel and the ferry terminal that takes you towards Kowloon City. Transport is easy.

Thank you october_fun for your recent update on the Salisbury. After much looking we decided that this hotel represents good value (hard bed excepted). All we have to do is wait until their booking window opens for early September and we will book.
Thank you everyone for your input.

Oz the MTR is easy to use and very clean and safe and the bus terminals have good signage. Make sure you get to see outside of the city too. The little islands and bays are very picturesque.
