where to go in asia & pacific during august?
Hello all!
Currently I'm teaching in PRC and when my contract expires next year, some friends of mine will be coming to visit and we want to spend at least a month or two moving around. The primary focus of this trip, for me, is to get on a really really nice beach. Maybe a really secluded beach and also a more backpackerish beach in addition.
The problem is, as I've come to find...it seems that August is monsoon season for much of southeast asia...so previous choices of thailand, vietnam etc...seem less attractive. Can anyone recommend a country or two that might be worth checking out? Perhaps a place or two with good beaches and enough variety to spend some time kicking about?
Thanks so much...i'm looking forward to spending a lot of time on this forum.

many folks love thailand in august....check it out some more... it is high season in bali....
you are correct about M but they do not always mean constant rain.... one other benefit is that prices are at their lowest....september is the real month to avoid in thailand...

August is only monsoon season on the west coasts of Thailand and Malaysia. Places like Phuket. The east coast is in quite good weather in August. If you want secluded/backpackerish beaches, I would choose any one of a number of islands in Malaysia. Try Redang, the Perhatians, or someplace like Rawa, see http://www.rawasfr.com/, or the beaches of Borneo. You could combine this with adventure things like hiking, kayaking, spelunking, etc.
Koh Samui on the east coast of Thailand would also work, although it is more developed than many parts of the coast of Malaysia.
Bali is basically bone dry in August, and would make a great choice, IMO. Beaches are not as spectacular as Malaysia and Thailand, but great culture/art/music, food and people. Lovely inland areas too. You could all rent a house, see vrbo.com for a start.
August can also work for some Vietnam beaches, but watch rain and typhoon issues. See weatherbase.com for an idea of rainfall. The Philippines is usually quite rainy everywhere.
