Where to buy area rugs in Hong Kong

Hi,

My daughter just moved to Hong Kong and we are looking for furnishings for her apartment. We are familiar with Horizon Plaza and the design area on Queens Road east in Wan Chai but we are looking for rug stores. We noticed that Causeway Bay area has a mile of stores dealing with tiling and bathroom fixtures. Is there an area in Hong Kong that has lots of carpet/rug stores.

thanks for your help.

The first question is whether you mean Persian carpets or antique/old area rugs like from India and China, or do you mean new rugs? If you mean new rugs, I would try major department stores (Sogo, some Lane Crawford stores, and possibly Wing On for more moderate prices) and Ikea. Tang Ping Carpets has been around for generations and has a good selection and will make to order. http://www.taipingcarpets.com/

Some of the design stores you mention above on Queen’s Road East also offers rugs and there are one or two Persian rug shops (try the eastern end near the recently restored Wan Chai market building).

Otherwise, for Persian and other carpets there isn’t an area in Hong Kong which is quite like the plumbing/lighting area of Wan Chai. There used to be a good number of rug shops on Hollywood Road, but as rents have increased they have been taken over by bars and restaurants. But if you try toward the western end of Hollywood Road, you may still find some rug shops.

Out in Shatin, there is a mall dedicated to home furnishings called Home Square, but I am not sure it has a whole lot of rugs. May be worth a look, see http://www.homesquare.com.hk/. It yards from the Temple of 10,000 Buddhas so the trip won’t be entirely wasted if you go there as well.

I think Horizon Plaza is one of the better places for Persian/Asian rugs. I have purchased several there over the years, and it is the first place I would go if I needed more rugs.
