where should I add a night: shanghai, southwest/li river, xi'an, beijing

there are so many incredible options in China, it's so hard to choose. I will be traveling in November and I believe at this point have narrowed it down to include: Shanghai, Li River area/Southwest, Xi'an, Beijing. I am planning at minimum a 13 night trip, but can extend it to 14 nights if needed. I have one night to play in my schedule and don't know where to add the extra night... Shanghai??? that's where I will arrive... maybe it's best to spend an extra night there to help with the long trip from the US?
I am currently thinking:
3 nights Shanghai
4 nights Li River area/Southwest (fly into Guilin)
1 night Xi'an
3 nights Beijing

I know there is also a lot to see in the Southwest, I plan to spend time in Guilin, Longshen, Yangshou, day cruise in Yangshou toward Xingping... is four nights enough or whould it make sense to add another night in this area or one of the bigger cities like shanghai or beijing

I have received an expensive quote from Wild China just for the 4 nights in the Southwest, which includes the land portion, hotel, guides, meals for $1800+... I would like the easy of transportation from the small towns and possibly a guide where needed. Wild China has proposed a beautiful itinerary, but it is only a portion of my trip and I might need to cut things out of the itinerary (they won't do the land only portion without hotel and meals which I understand, but it may not suit my needs).

thank you in advance for your feedback

Overall very nice itinerary, as to where to add the extra night, it depends on your interests and your daytime travels between cities.

If you add it to Shanghai, you can visit Suzhou or a watertown. You definitely will have enough to do if you add a night to Xian, same for Beijing.

4 nights is good for Guilin/Yangshou area but $1,800+ from Wild China for one person?! It is really expensive and you can do much better than that!

Add a night in Xian. Shanghai is enough unless you want to also visit Suzhou or Hangzhou.

If you want to add a more night in Shanghai, pls consider to visit Hangzhou (derserved city)or Xi'tang or wuzhen(water village).

Enjoy!

Hi Mtb127,
I've just done my 2nd trip in China. Amazing country. Personally, I was so dissapointed with Guilin/Yangshuo area that I wished I had not gone there (other than for the rice fields). But this is my own personal opinion.
Having said that, Beijing may also be worth an extra night as you need 1 day for the wall, 1 day for forbiddne city and some extra temple, 1 day summer palace and temple of heaven... and then no time to go to the markets or to see the city. Beijing can be quite tiring and and extra night will provide some breathing space.
While in Beijing go to Lan - it is a restaurant/bar (it is difficult to believe that such glamorous place exists at all in china, but go and see for yourself).
And if you like art, go to the art district. Incredible place. did not exist 2 years ago.

Regards
