We just returned from China on 10/30. I think that there are a few scams out there, but not a problem if you are aware of them. If you are flying into the airport, do not let anyone talk you into taking their taxi. Go to the taxi line and get one of the taxis there. Be aware that it is best to have your hotel name written in Chinese characters, and if at all possible find out a landmark that it is near. We did not have a landmark and it would have been better since the driver did not know where our hotel was and it was a Marriott in a very visible area.
Also, as you probably know don't go with anyone saying they are trying to practice their English. There are reports of tea costing a lot of money. The same thing if they wish to show their art.
We felt very safe in Beijing. If you have any other questions I would be happy to answer.

Make sure the csb driver uses the meter. Get out of the cab if he doesn't. Don't believe anything a seller tells you about an item. Assume everything is a fake and you won't be wrong. Enjoy your trip.

You don't really need to take a taxi from the airport, especially if your hotel is near a Subway stop. Have just returned after a week in Beijing - the airport express train only costs 25yuan per person ($5) and the trip to Dongzhimen takes about 25 minutes. We could walk to the Holiday Inn Express from there, but it is also quite easy to take a 2yuan underground fare to almost anywhere in Beijing from there.
We had gorgeous clear sunny days all week, what luck!
