What should I pack for China?
hi, i'm going to beijing, shanghai, luoyang, kaifeng, xian (2 weeks total). i'm wondering what the weather is like. i checked weatherchannel but would also like some feedback. is it now too cold for shorts and tshirts? i was going to bring pants but i think the humidity is still high (so i thought shorts would be better). thanks!

Layering is the way to go. Make sure you have one warm jacket. Even in summer I rarely see locals wearing shorts. Great site for 10 day forecasts.

Thanks, everyone. How do you all pack for two weeks? I'm just curious -- how may pants, shirts, jackets? My past travels have always been in the summer when it's hot and humid so I can't re-wear my clothes because they are dirty and stinky. And, to the poster who suggested a warm jacket... are you suggesting a parka/down jacket or will a sweatshirt do? thanks again!

It will be cool at night and possibly crisp with sunny days in Luoyong and Xian, Keifeng. Air quality can be bad in Luoyong, so take some throat meds. Not many European/Western tourists in Luoyang and Kaifeng. Kaifeng has an interesting history of a Jewish population if you like history. When one of the first missionaries hit the area (Father Mateo Ricci?) he found symbolisim and church practices which were essentially Jewish in nature. Your timing is great, best month to visit. Henan is an oven in the summer. Few tourists wear shorts unless by a pool (which I don't recall seeing too many of in those cities). Good choices on places to visit, have fun!

Thanks, Beaker. I am getting excited. We weren't too sure about these places initially because they aren't very popular (like Suzhou, Hangzhou, etc) but we wanted to see more of "old" China. Sounds like a light jacket should be okay for this time of year so I will pack that. I do appreciate all the help!

Guilin is reputed as the most beautiful scenery city of China. Its peaks rise as suddenly from the Earth as trees in the forest, in various shapes resemble buns, camels, fish, saw-teeth, horses, etc. it is the city you must visit it or you will miss the most beautiful landscape out. the river is like green silk ribbon while the hills seem hairpins of jade. The landscape in Guilin is characterized by its “green hills, clear waters, pretty rocks and fantastic caves’’.

I just had a great trip to Hangzou 2 weeks ago. Hangzhou is very very popular with both local and foreign tourists. Try your best to avoid going there on weekends. The crowd started to come around Friday afternoon and by Saturday the whole West Lake area were filled with people. We had a Saturday afternoon train back to Shanghai and almost missed it due to the traffic and lack of taxis!
