What shoes to pack for China?

We are going on a trip to China in two weeks. If you went to China what shoes did you take or what shoes do you think you should take? We will be on Yangtzie cruise for three days<BR>Thanks

Closed, comfortable shoes or boots. China is dirty. I wear sandals in New York and Rome, but wouldn't take them to China. Whatever you take, make sure you've worn them and they're comfortable. New shoes are a no-no.

I took a pair of Merrell shoes, they were very comfortable and had good traction. The pair I bought was black leather so I could wear them with both my casual and dressier outfits. The style was called Topo Moc Pro.

SLIPPERS!!! Believe me when I tell you that the women of Asia love slipper-type shoes, preferably with an open toe. Yes, were comfortable shoes when touring, but wear your slippers when you are dressed to go out at night. I have traveled all over Asia--India, Nepal, China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Sri Lanka, and Cambodia. When I stayed at the Oriental in Bangkok, all the well-dressed women wore velvet slippers for dinner at Le Normandie and Sala Rim Nam.

When you go to China dress down not up. We don't like to look like rich tourist which the Chinese hate. We have traveled all over Asia especially China. We wear chambry shirts and kakies with good leather work shoes. They always like us.

What an ass Roland is! The Chinese people aren't so shallow as to judge someone on how they are dressed. You will be judged by your manners and smile, not your clothing. Roland, what a horrible racist you are. Roland has obviously never been to Shanghai or Beijing, which are sophisticated, urbane cities, and people here dress up to go out at night.

Is it possible to buy good quality shoes in China? I did notice many of the shoes I wear are made in China....but are they sold in Hong Kong or southern China where we will be visiting?

John G is right. In the larger cities especially Shanghai, people tend to really dress up when going out in the evening. You'll stand out more as a tourist if you dress down.
