Hello all,
i am student of tourism management and i have an essay to prepare about any place in the world, so i thought i could write something about Singapore. What i can't decide, is what to write about...
Because our professor doesn't want the subject to be too wide, but rather specific.
I thought to write about the parks of singapore, but when i searched info for them, i found out they are far more than what i thought.
So do you have any suggestions? Thanks in advance!!!

Write about Spore history and strategic geographical location. That's the main attraction and reeled in travellers from all over the world for hundreds of years. This contributed to the plethora of races, food, historic sites, worship houses .. etc in Spore today. Give limelight on how Spore has been a traveller's hub long before the word tourism exist.

Nikoleta, I would write about Singapore's points of differentiation and what they have done and continue to do to make Singapore a tourist destination.

Singapore is a very small place. It doesn't have beaches (to speak of). It doesn't have natural wildlife or a lot of natural beauty. It doesn't have cultural depth. What it has done is capitalize on what it DOES have: a clean, safe environment, an ample development budget, a good ethnic mix, and an interesting history.

AND...coming soon are the casinos. To me this is the most fascinating question. Will gambling change squeaky clean Singapore? Why did the government feel that the rewards of introducing gambling were worth the risks?

I wonder what id i write about the most important parks in Singapore? Or then i thought to write separately about nature parks-zoological parka, then about entertainment parks (could refer to sentosa then i suppose) and cultural parks (with a mention to chinatown, arab street and little india). I think that would include all, but again should I write down about all the parks? They seem so many, I can't even count!Is it really like that?
To be honest i have never been to Singapore, but i have read a lot about it and yes mariott i know what you mean about capitalising what it has. Like we say in my country "you ate not who you are, but who you show you are" because in the end that is what people believe.And in way that is clever, esp when it comes to promoting your country as a tourist destination!
Well, i hope someday i will have the chance to see all by byself too!

Traveltwiddle i agree with you but the essay is on Touristic Geography course, so it wouldn't be wise for me to expand a lot on history material, that will just be a short part in my essay!

Trying to answer Marmot's question (actually 2 questions)

Will gambling change squeaky clean Singapore?

The government will try it's darnest to keep everything above board. Genting was investigated when there was news that Stanley Ho was to have a stake in the casino. Genting bought the shares back from Stanley Ho who made a tidy profit.

Also Singaporeans have to pay a fee of something like S$100-200? (can't remember the exact amount) to enter the casinos. This is to discourage the locals from gambling.

Why did the government feel that the rewards of introducing gambling were worth the risks?

It's part of the bit to be a more hip and happening place to attract more visitors and foreign talents to live/work here. Crazy Horse had a show here until recently when it folded due to poor business rather than government regulation.
