Weather in Bangkok & Phuket in September

We are a family of four looking at visiting Phuket for 7 nights in the 2nd week of September 2013 (we have been to Bangkok/Phuket before but in April) and I am concerned that from reading previous reviews that this would not be best time to go due to it being the rainy/monsoon season.

Looking at staying at the Merlin Beach Resort (stayed here last time) or maybe the Patong Merlin Resort to be closer to shopping, restaurents, beach etc ,although the reports vary quite considerably in regards to service, rooms and amenities.

Basically as with the last trip looking at a lot of shopping (which we will also do in Bangkok) with some relaxation around the pool.

Would appreciate feedback on
1. should we put our trip off due to the rain/monsoon season.
2, if you stayed at the Patong Merlin resort how you found it or any other recommendations of resorts in the same area.
Thanks

www.weatherbase.com for weather info.

Not the best time weather-wise for Phuket, though you may get great rates as it is off-season.

Save your shopping for Bangkok. Prices are higher and selection not as good in Phuket.

You should also note that a lot of the beaches around Phuket will be red flagged.

September is heaviest rain time of the year for Phuket, beaches can be red-flagged, at that time for beach island time Koh Samui , Koh tao / nanguan should be much better weather

I Stayed in Phuket throughout the whole month of September last year and it wasn't so bad, you get rain but the sun still does make an appearance, i wouldn't be so put off about the possible chance of rain but then again you could get caught out in some heavy storms. Not very helpful i know but September does have it's dry spells.
You mentioned that you wanted to stay in Patong as it is close to the beach, and other reasons. To be honest, Patong Beach is probably the worst on the island. Nicer beaches include Kamala and Bang Tao, maybe worth checking out accommodation in those areas

I've been to Phuket in September, and yes, the beach was red flagged. That means that you should not be in the water, due to strong currents. If you are going for the water/beach, then please consider Samui instead.

I was there for 16 days over September and the weather wasn't that bad. It only rained 1 day.

As you can see from the historical data. you were lucky, indeed, Zee. Were the beaches still re-flagged?
