Hi there, we are planning a holiday to Bali ( seminyak) maybe with a 9 yr old and 7yr old. I have been to bali as a single person but never with kids. Where to stay? Hotel, villa in hotel or private villa?
Cost up to $550 per night. Access to pools important and as good as it gets location?
Where should we stay and what should we do? How many nights do we need? All feedback valued. Thank you
Villas in seminyak

First I would suggest that you divide your time between a beach location and the Ubud area.
The main beaches are Kuta, Seminyak and Jimbaran on the west coast and Sanur and Nusa Dua on the east coast. You can find a range of accommodation in all of them.
Sanur, Jimbaran and Nusa Dua have the best swimming beaches. I like Seminyak a lot, but the surf can be rough. Plenty of people swim there, and the resorts have lifeguards, but you have to be careful of the currents.
Villas are a good value for a family, but the pools tend to be on the smaller side and the kids may find villa living too quiet and isolated. There are dozens (hundreds?) of villas in Seminyak. I'd go with the Petitenget area which is a little less congested and has good beach access, lots of restaurants and shops.
The rate really depends on the proximity to the beach and the time of year. Remember that resorts add 21% to the rate.
The Laksmana group is well located with villas at a range of price points. The Colony is a boutique hotel in the same area with a nice pool and not too expensive. There are several villa rental agencies. Prestige is a good place to start.
Some villa complexes within resorts are really nice (Legian, Samaya) some are cramped and too far from the beach so it's hard to generalize, but it's nice to have access to the resort's facilities.
In Ubud I'd suggest that you find a resort outside of town. I'd look at the Alam Sari and the Alila.

I just got back from my first trip to Bali and agree with Marmot - split your time between the beach and Ubud. In the Ubud area we stayed in the Ubud Hanging Gardens. It's not actually in Ubud, it's about 25 minutes away depending on traffic. Each villa had a decent size private pool that could be heated if you wish. A lot of honeymooners, but I also saw quite a few kids.
