This may seem like a random question, but here goes. We are planning to go to ubud, Bali for our honeymoon and splurging on a little villa with our own private pool. Evening and late night swims sound divine. However, we wondered if it is worth the splurge due to mosquitos and the tendancy I have to be feasted upon by the little buggers! I usually take the proper procautions such as Deet containing sprays and anti-malaria meds. We would hate to splurge only to find out that mosquitos keep us from really using the pool. Has anyone else run into this problem?

I have been to parts of SE Asia and Africa before, and lived with the mosquitos, but just wanted someone else opinion if they have splurged for their own pool.

We had a pool villa at two different places in Bali, including Ubud and did not have a problem with mosquitoes.

It's not the pool per se that's the problem. Any time you're outside at night in the tropics, you will get mosquitos. The degree of annoyance depends on how near you are to foilage or water features like ponds, whether or not the landscape has been sprayed, and, of course, your own susceptability.

Mosquitos won't bother you when you're in the water and when you're out you can use repellent. You could also ask the villa management what they do to control mosquitos. Most resorts and restaurants in Bali have a procedure of fogging and spraying. It doesn't eliminate them entirely, but it beats them back a bit.

Personally, I find Balinese mosquito bites a lot less irksome than those I remember from growing up in America. The Indonesian bites itch for a while but recede quickly.

I certainly wouldn't let mosquitos deter me from a moonlight honeymoon dip in the pool!

We stayed in a pool villa in Ubud in April and mosquitoes were never a problem, mostly due to the fact that the hotel had mosquito coils lit at night everywhere around the outside of the villa and due to there really not being that many mosquitoes in general.

You should inquire with your hotel about their practices, but I think it's safe to assume they're already thinking about this in advance.

Enjoy--it's a beautiful place...well worth soaking up the scenery late into the evening.

You did not miss it. It's one of those things on my (very long) list of things-to-do. At some point, though, it feels like it may become a bit irrelevant though due to the time that's elapsed.

I definitely intend to, but between the next trip planning, my new promotion at work (yay!) and life getting in the way--it keeps slipping by the wayside. Hopefully I haven't disappointed too many folks. I know a lot of people are waiting on it. Hopefully my upcoming vacation will afford me the time I need to devote to finishing it.

I trust (and hope) that things are well for you and yours...

I also am a target for mosquitos but read recently that mossies are atrracted to scents such as perspiration and perfume. I think if you try to shower frequently, do not use any scented products and use a mosquito spray /lemongrass/citronella product you should be ok.

Ubud is not a malaria danger so you don't need to worry about that. There is dengue right now because of our prolonged wet season this year, but those bite only during the day. You will know them by their black and white stripes! Entire villages are being fogged regularly by the government, and of course the hotels are also very diligent about that.
