Vietnam - Quy Nhon
Will spend 2 weeks mid-February next year, with a week either side in Thailand.
Not bothered about Halong Bay, and Sapa will probably be too chilly and damp.
So will be splitting our time...
- 4 nights Hanoi
- Quy Nhon 6 nights
- 4 nights Hanoi
I've got my eye on 3B Hotel in Hanoi.
Anyone [Crellston?] been to Quy Nhon, and got any accommodation ideas? Budget is US$50 a night [max].

Hi LL. We haven't been to Quy Nhon. We were going to go on our last visited but go distracted by other events and, as I recall it wasn't the best time as far as the weathe was concerned. Having said that, some Vietnamese friends, strongly suggested we go as it is "more Vietnamese" than other beach resorts- I took that to mean not many foreign tourists. Not much English is spoken apparently.
I agree about Halong, but wouldn't entirely discount the far north, Sapa, Ba Be or Ha Giang. It will doubtless be chilly but you should get blue skies.
A few years ago we did the "Dien Bien Phu" loop from Hanoi to Sapa, DBP, son la and Mai Chau around that time of year and really enjoyed it. Takes a round 6 days inc. 2 in Sapa. Stunning scenery and, apart from Sapa, distinctly below average accomodation and food!

What I don't want to really do is move about too much. Got 7 lots of accommodation to sort out already, so that'll probably be sufficient.
Will do a weather check when we get to Hanoi before considering Sapa [and around].
So far booked Emirates from LHR to and from Bangkok, and Nok Air from Bangkok [Don Meuang] to and from Hanoi.
At the moment...
3 Feb - Lunchtime arrival in Bangkok. 3 nights Bangkok, probably staying by the river on Phra Athit [New Siam Riverside or New Siam Palace View].
6 Feb - 0745 Train to Kanchanaburi, and stay in the area for 3 nights, or 5 Feb get the overnight sleeper train from Bangkok to Nong Khai.
9 Feb - Back to Bangkok and stay overnight.
10 Feb - PM Fly to Hanoi. Stay in Old Quarter for 4 nights. Never been before so filling time in shouldn't be a problem.
14 Feb - Fly to Quy Nhon for 6 nights.
20 Feb - Fly to Hanoi for 4 nights.
24 Feb - Fly to Bangkok for 3 nights. Possibly have an overnight in Ayutthaya.
27 Feb - Fly back to UK.

As much as I loved Hanoi, I think 4-5 nights is enough. Have you been to hue or hoi an? We loved Sapa - one of the highlights of our trip to Vietnam. Perhaps you should consider it based on the weather.

On our last trip we stayed in Hanoi for a couple of weeks and certainly didn't run out of things to see and do, so I don't feel that 2 tranches of 4 days is too much, but would recommend splitting your stay between the Old Quarter and somewhere else. I like the area just to the west of the lake The OQ is fun, frenetic and absolutely heaving with people. Choose your accomodation carefully I as SOME, not all hotels, in the OQ can have a problem with rats in that area due to the age of the building, drains etc.( - regardless of standard) se moved out of one after a few days as the scratching in the ceilings was very irritating (plus seeing a large rat wandering through the dining room didn't inspire confidence.
Ninh Binh / Cuc Phuong may be worth a look at that time of year as I believed you may be able to get the train from there down to a station near to Quy Non.

Also made getting aroundthe sights around Kanchanabur more covenient. Just a thought.

Got washed out in a tropical depression for 5 days in Hue last September.
Fortunately that was followed by a week of gorgeous weather in Hoi An.
Also stayed in Saigon, Dalat, and Danang.

There's been a few good hotel recommendations for Hanoi on TA recently, so I'm not going to commit until I'm pretty sure I've got it right.
I've let my driving licence lapse, and couldn't be bothered renewing it. One less idiot on the road.

LL - I was just sifting through my email folders and came across some correspondence from a homestay we were considering in Hanoi http://www.hanoihomestay.com .
We never got around to staying there, but may make a nice contrast to the Old Quarter.
