US cell phone usage in Jakarta

I have read that you can use your regular Sprint or AT&T phone, but not sure. Anyone know what I would need to do?

many thanks!

You can use your US phone (or tablet)but calls and internet connection may be very expensive. Check your US provider for rates.

Alternately you can buy a cheap phone and/or a cheap phone card for use while you're in Indonesia. This is very cheap, but of course you will have a different phone number.

You can use your US smartphone for internet connection (e.g. to check your email) as free WIFI is widely accessible.

If your phone is unlocked you can just buy a local SIM card and use it while you're in Indonesia. If you had bought your phone with a service plan in the US you can check with your service provider if it's unlocked or ask them to unlock it for you.

Like marmot have said, It will be very expensive to use your US number while abroad.

I have t-mobile so I called and asked customer service to unlock my phone, the instruction was in the email in no time.

When you arrival the airport, you go out to the welcome area and buy a sim card from one of the kiosks, ASK the shopkeeper to activate it for you. If I remember correctly the instuction was in Indonesian. She was more than happy to do it.
