United awards between South Asia and Japan

I was just looking at the FF award chart for Star Alliance awards at united dot com. The *A awards between Japan and South Asia are 40,60,80 thousand miles for economy, business, and first class, respectively.

But if the whole itin is on United metal then the awards cost half as much: 20,30,40 thousand miles.

Travel can originate in Japan or in South Asia. United has nonstops between Tokyo and Singapore and between Tokyo and Bangkok.

United also flies between Tokyo and Saigon via Hong Kong. Another United route is Singapore- Hong Kong- Tokyo.

I would assume that a stopover or open-jaw could be done with that award. If so, it would offer some interesting options.

For example, get a cheap ticket to Tokyo. Then use 30,000 miles and fly business class to Bangkok. Get a Silk Air ticket to Singapore. Return to Tokyo on the award ticket. maybe

I've read that a 1K can get one-way awards for half the cost. Fly business class from SGN to HKG, stop in H.K., then go on to Tokyo in biz class. 15,000 miles.

not as much fun as figuring out a oneworld award, but I know some of you are United flyers.
