I will be staying there in a few weeks and will try to send you a reply when I get back(end of Dec). I think that they were just bought out by a larger hotel group---Taj--I think. They are supposed to be very reputable. I also would suggest another great website for India: www.indiamike.com
It also has been extremely helpful.

We stayed at the Ajhit Bawhan in January and loved it. It is next door.
Wonderful service, great pool and good breakfast.
Highly recommend it-went for 3 nights and stayed 6.

Hi - I stayed at this hotel in October this year. It has recently been acquired by the Anan Resort Group who we were told were going to close the hotel shortly (dec or new year) for 6 months and completely refurb it. I also understand that if u want to stay at the hotel after this time, the cost will be prohibitive - it will be THE place to stay in Jodphur. If you are planning to travel before the refurb it will be well worth it. The hotel is enormous and very grand. My room was beautiful with authentic Indian antiques (very palatial!) and a fantastic view of the Mehrangarh Fort. Service good, food excellent - the pillars restaurant is outside on the pillared balcony with fabulous views of the gardens/fort - great place to eat.

Hi mirp, I have stayed at Umaid Bhawan and it was wonderful, although expensive. If it is going to be refurbished and become even more expensive, then that is sad as it will be beyond the regular traveller's budget. Last year I stayed at the Ranbanka Hotel at the bottom of the hill from the Umaid Bhawan and next door was the Ajit Bhawan which the other poster mentioned. They are both smaller heritage hotels and are reasonably priced, but are nowhere near the class of the Umaid. But it was comfortable enough, depends on what you want to spend your money on. I don't know the cost at the Ranbanka as it was an all inclusive holiday, but I got a brochure from Ajit Bhawan and it quoted Rs1995 for a single room and Rs2400 for a double. That tariff finished on Sep. 2003 but wouldn't change too much I wouldn't think. They have a swimming pool, and looked a bit better than the Ranbanka. If you look the hotels up on the Net, I don't think you can contact the hotels direct via the Net, at least I found this so last year. Only the travel agents advertise all the accommodation. If you want to contact them direct, Ranbanka is phone +91 0291 512801, 512802; and Ajit Bhawan is +91 0291 2511410, email [email protected]. If you do stay elsewhere, make sure you go to Umaid for dinner or drinks on the pillared balcony, a real treat.

The property has been purchased by the Aman Group. They will do it justice -keeping true to the culture and offering a level of service that India has never experienced before.

Yes, it sounds like a lot of money, but IMHO, it will be worth it. For us, having an Aman in India is reason enough to travel there.
