Ubud, Bali - hotel selection
Just wondered if anyone could recommend a nice hotel in Ubud around the $50 price range?
Do not want to stay at the Tehgal Sari again, and would probably prefer something along Monkey Forest rd.
Any suggestions welcomed - thank you very much

Not Monkey Forest Road, but a really special place. www.alamsari.com Our stay here is one of our top 3 anywhere. It's a bit like Tegal Sari in some ways, without the charges for many things, and more personal. 10 minutes by car from Ubud. If you stay there, take advantage of their course offerings...they are so much fun. Alam Sari is much more than a place to sleep. It's an experience. Before our stay, I communicated extensively with the owners who live and work in Jakarta. I'd recommend you do the same.
For others...though not on Monkey Forest Road exactly, still close to town...Alam Jiwa is supposed to be nice, Honeymoon Guesthouses looked nice, price is right...the only thing I thought it lacked was a personal touch. Bali Spirit is reported nice...but the rooms closest to the road are noisy from both the road and the adjoining rooms...better to pay a bit more for the rooms lower down. Maybe look at the Tjampuhan, or a bit farther out of town, the Ulun Ubud. Right on Monkey Forest Road Kajune Mua...but I think it's over your budget. Some like the Ubud Village, but to me it felt like "just a place to stay" and lacked personality or anything to distinguish it from anywhere else.
Curious...Tegal Sari is so popular, but why I'm not sure. I didn't get a good feeling from e-mailing with them, and they wanted payment in full for a stay 8 months in the future...so we didn't stay there. Why wouldn't you stay there again?

We stayed at the Pertiwi on Monkey Forest Road, an easy walk either to the Royal Palace and markets in one direction or the Monkey Forest in the other. You can get a room for under $50 if you go through asiarooms.com or one of the other discount sites, except in the month of August when the rates are jacked up a bit, but still not too bad. Prices are higher on Pertiwi's own site, but take a look there anyway to see if you might like it: www.pertiwiresortspa.com
It is Balinese-owned and the staff are friendly, helpful, and quite wonderful. I had purchased a wooden mask of the monkey god Hanuman, and left it lying on my nightstand. The next day, the cleaners had festooned it with hibiscus and frangipani! (If you have been to Bali before, this probably won't surprise you). The breakfast buffet is more than adequate, with a few Indonesian and western selections, as well as fresh fruit and yummy banana pancakes, but it is not as lavish as those in the elite hotels. In addition to the pool in the picture, there is another pool in a more open and sunny location. There is a very reliable money exchange next door, and it is near many excellent restaurants. In addition to the regular rooms, there are a couple of (reputedly) exceptional villas on the premises as well. When we were there the king of Solo (a province of Java) was staying in one of the villas, and there was a special evening of Balinese music and dance in his honor. He invited all the other guests to attend as well, so we got to meet him and enjoy a very special evening. If you want to venture farther away, it is easy to arrange transport.

We have been to Tegal Sari twice in the past. The rooms and setting were lovely, but we were not very impressed with the management there.
Also, it is a bit of a walk to many of the nice restaurants in Ubud.
Just looking for a different nice place in the same price range - but up closer to the main street.

Thanks for the comments on Tegal Sari. Seems like the feeling they give via e-mail is the one they give in person as well. To me, they seemed like they only cared about getting our money for the room well in advance of our stay...never did answer any of my other questions about activities, cultural experiences and such. The good rapport with the owners of Alam Sari is what got us at first...and their staff and management was equally lovely. Being out of town was not a problem in the least for us...we loved it in fact. A whole different Bali than in the tourist center.
